I have two Retevis/Ailunce branded radios, an RT82 and the HD1 (now I planning to buy an RT52), I have bought them by my own, they have not been supplied by Retevis, and this is not a fake review sponsored by anyone, it’s my personal opinion! I would start first by saying that this company is the only one I know that has invested so much for been so close to its customers, and they has also made notable efforts to listen to us, like no other brand has done before as I know. I appreciate that! I have had my HD1 for more than three years, the radio is still my favorite handy talky. I have American and Japanese rigs, but the simplicity of operation of this handy is unrivaled. Its build quality is excellent, mine took a big unintended drop at the first day I received, never even had a symptom of failure after that. The good quality details in its cabinet, in its weather seals, and all accessories are pretty good. The sensitivity is excellent even exceeding the factory specs, the both antennas work perfect (long and short), this have enough gain to hear weak stations quite easily. The battery and its duration is a separate chapter (like none of my other radios), the battery after more than three years, haven’t had a perceptible drop in their autonomy, the HD1 exceeds any of my other equipment in autonomy no matter the time passed. Reaching today the HD1 more than two days in receiving mode and occasional transmission, without turning it off. Digital modulation has become excellent
Very, very good radio

I have a number of DMR radios for ham use. I needed a waterproof HT for an upcoming cross country motorcycle trip (none of my other ones are IP67 waterproof). This is BY FAR the easiest to program from the keypad DMR radio I have used. The CPS software is usable and being able to import/export CSV files makes editing a breeze. Not all tables can be exported to CSV files. For example, zone information must be entered/updated via the software. A minor inconvenience. The battery life is fantastic...better than any other HT I've used. I ordered directly from Retevis and got the radio from China to the US in a week, which is amazing. The bundle price was great compared to what is available on Amazon. The antennas (short and long in bundle) are adequate, but typical performance. I use a Diamond SRH77CA instead of the bundled antennas, which is far superior. Bottom line - I am very happy and would buy it again.

I simply defaulted the radio and reinstalled the codeplug. I was unable to reproduce the problem and it only occurred on the one radio the one time. We programmed the two side buttons for short press "zone up - zone down", but they seem sluggish. In other words, no matter how fast you press the buttons, the zones only change at a certain rate. IF you have a LOT of zones programmed, it can take quite some time to find the correct zone. Also, the zone names only appear visible as you cycle through them for a very brief time. Sometimes it's not long enough to get a good look at.
Our summary is that the Ailunce HD1 is a GOOD value for the money. It's versatile, tough, performs well in analog and DMR modes, has standard interface connections (SMA-M radio, and M-5 accessory connector), and in spite of that paragraphs of "gripes" above, we would indeed buy more of these radios and would recommend them to others.
In addition, Ailunce customer service is RESPONSIVE, which is more than I can say about many, MANY retailers. I had more than few questions prior to our purchasing these radios and Nancy at Ailunce was always prompt in getting me an answer. Good customer service is difficult to find, and Ailunce seems to being a better than average job in this area.

The software for programming the HD1 is completely sufficient, however, we've found that in grouping channels, one tends to lose track of functional areas in the software. Yes, there are zones. But there's no way at a glance in the software to determine on the channel page/tab that a particular channel is in a particular zone. We solved this by sacrificing a transmit-prohibited channel over each functional area which is named so that we know the channels below are part of THAT functional area. It's really not an issue with 3000 channels, but it would be nice to be able to see zone assignment at a glance on the channel page/tab. The belt clip for the radio DOES come with the radio, however it takes a Torx #6 driver bit to install, which is NOT included with the radio. I'm a big fan of Torx headed screws, especially for small applications. However, a product with user installable parts using Torx headed screws "should" come with a tool for installation. There was one instance where one of the HD1s we have lost it's configuration suddenly and inexplicably. It was plugged into a vehicle battery eliminator and I "think" that the vehicle was powered down while the radio was still powered up. I'm pretty certain that power to the radio was interrupted while it was still on. I didn't think anything of it. But when I went to use the radio again a few minutes later, it had a message on the screen which said, "killed".

However, we don't like that the backlight for the display can be difficult to see in broad daylight. It hasn't been a huge hinderance, but it would be nice if the backlight could be made brighter. The channel knob on top of the radio seems "sluggish". By this, I mean that if you turn it too fast, it seems as though the channels can't keep up with it. The volume knob (potentiometer) seems to be non-linear. At the bottom of the turn, just after turning on, there's no volume (of course), and as you turn it through the first quarter turn, it becomes louder a LOT more than from the next quarter turn. This has caused VERY minor issues getting APRS to function well using a soundcard modem. It would be nice if there were a thumbscrew on the accessory cover of the M-5 connector, and it would be nice if the accessory cover were wired to the radio, so it can't be lost/misplaced.

In other words, it's entirely possible to set up the transmit frequency in the VHF range, and the receive frequency in the UFH range, or vice versa. It will NOT however mix modes similarly. In other words, it will NOT transmit analog and receive DMR, or vice versa. Upgrading the firmware on our new HD1s was very, VERY easy. We like that a custom graphic can be installed on the radio, and we fully took advantage of this feature in order to keep track of radios. In summary of the pros of this radio, we like them! We believe that at right around $200 retail, they're a good value for the function and performance they afford.
Before I outline what I don't like about the Ailunce HD1 I need state that everything I'm going to write here is more of a minor annoyance than anything else. None of these things would prevent us from purchasing this radio again. In fact, even after becoming aware of what I'm about to write, one of our members bought another radio. That's how miniscule these things are.

We LIKE that there are 3000 slots for channels, and 256 zones. There are 64 channels permitted per zone, and it gives the ability to organize a codeplug by function, or geographic area. Battery life on the HD1 is AMAZING. We tend to get better than 24 hours continual use, depending on how we use the radio. The programmable side buttons are also a VERY useful feature, and they support mapping for long/short push. So effectively four functions can be had on two individual buttons. We really appreciate that the accessory interface is a standard M-5 (Motorola type) plug. However, Retevis sells an M-5 to K-2 adapter, so all of our previous 2 pin (K-2) accesories which we had from Baofeng radios work with the HD1. We like that there are TWO channel selectors. One is a rotary knob on top of the radio between the antenna and power/volume switch. This one is VERY handy if the user is wearing gloves. The other way to change channels is on the key pad, which is good IF the user isn't wearing gloves. The volume on the HD1 is EXCELLENT. If you're in a loud area, just turn it up. It will be loud enough to overcome almost anything happening around you and the sound quality at higher volumes isn't distorted. The dual channel display is nice, and we appreciate the dual-watch feature. The HD1 is a dual band VHF/UHF transceiver, however it will permit configuration of a channel using mixed bands.

Since we have half a dozen HD1s to use together, programming a usable, scalable codeplug was a factor. I LIKE that I can export the channels from the programming software into a CSV file. I was able to write a Linux shell script which changes the various unique pieces of data in order to make a common channel codeplug easily portable between radios with various unique settings, such as DMR IDs. We're very NEW with DMR, but getting the HD1 up onto a local DMR repeater was very, VERY easy. Programming them for to simply interroperate with each other was trivial. One of the first things we were interested in testing was distance/range using Tier-1 (simplex) DMR. We were familiar with effective range using Baofeng analog hand held radios and wanted to see how the HD1's compared. We had read that the distance/range was GOOD with the HD1 using DMR. Granted, we swapped the stock antennas prior to testing with Smiley Antennas "Slim Duck 2 Meter" antennas, but we were able to achieve two miles using Tier-1 DMR simplex on 2 meter frequencies. Our terrain is mixed and semi-rural. Also, our location is a KNOWN bad spot for reaching out on both 2 meter and 70 cm frequencies. This is primarily due to terrain and obstructions. However, distance using the HD1 radios was over TWICE what we were able to attain with a Baofeng BF-F8HP. Also, ALL testing was done on the HD1 at mid power (3.5W). The HD1 is quite an "upgrade" over our Baofeng analog hand held radios.

Our experience with the Retevis/Ailunce HD1 has been POSITIVE so far. Myself and a few friends wanted multi-use radios which were well built and rugged for outdoor use where they would be exposed to the weather and possibly even get wet, or submerged in water. We read many, MANY reviews prior to purchasing the Retevis/Ailunce HD1.
This review will be slightly "high level" as I don't currently have any test equipment. So I'll mainly outline my observations from an operational standpoint, rather than a technical standpoint. Also, this review is on the HD1 which is NOT GPS enabled.
I want to state here that the Ailunce HD1 is a dual band (VHF/UHF) analog and DMR radio. In other words, it will function with conventional analog repeaters using PL tones on VHF/UHF bands, or DMR using DMR repeaters. During our research into a replacement standard hand held radio, we had difficulty ascertaining this, so I wanted to make this clear in order to possibly save somebody else some trouble.

I purchased a Ailunce HD1 Amateur Radio specifically for extreme outdoor hiking conditions. To date this radio has not let me down with respect to water proof and especially battery capacity. The audio is great and always clear. The display is a bit hard to see in bright sunlight but that is not an issue because I lock the frequency to a specific selection. I must say that upgrading the radio's internal software is also quite easy. I had a small issue with the factory antenna coming a bit loose during extended hikes but I just added a flat rubber O-ring to the base of the antenna and the problem was solved. I plan on ordering a spare HD1 as this radio is very dependable.
